The Sound Commons Project is a collective grounded in science, art, and scholarship. We believe that sound and music are key drivers towards a fairer, more inclusive society that lives in balance with the Earth and its ecosystems.

At the heart of the Sound Commons Project is the idea of sound as a commons—a shared public resource like air, water, or sunlight—freely available to everyone, yet belonging to no one. Just as birds sing to mark their territory, whales call out to find each other in the ocean, and humans speak and sing to connect, all living creatures use sound to communicate and find their way. When we listen and create sound, we connect with the world and all its species.

The Sound Commons Project begins with this simple idea: sound connects us with all living creatures. In this connection lies the power of sound to shape a kinder world. We invite you to explore sound as a shared space where we can recognise and celebrate our ties to each other and to nature.

We welcome artists, performers, scholars, researchers, students, individuals and groups to join us in creatively collaborating toward this vision.

To learn more about the idea of a sound commons, we recommend this article written by ethnomusicologist Jeff Todd Titon.
