Songs for the Sea

in collaboration with the Whale and Dolphin Conservation + Clyde Whale and Dolphin Watch
July 2024, West Coast of Scotland

The Sound Commons Project, in collaboration with the Whale and Dolphin Conservation and Clyde Whale and Dolphin Watch, recently brought Songs for the Sea to the Isle of Bute, an event inspired by the rhythms and voices of the ocean. The gatherings featured sea-inspired compositions by Cha Rosario and Luca Gambirasio, inviting listeners into a shared experience of sound that bridges land and sea, human and non-human.

A centrepiece of the evening was Over and Under / Squiggle’s Song, a song composed especially for the event. Following the journey of Squiggle, a bottlenose dolphin native to the Clyde, the song wove dolphin vocalisations with human voices, drawing the audience into a sing-along that resonated across species—a vivid reminder of sound as a common language.

Songs for the Sea embodies the Sound Commons Project’s vision of sound as a shared space where all beings can freely and safely connect. The event also highlighted Shorewatch’s milestone of one million volunteer minutes and invited Bute residents to join in this community-led conservation effort.

Over and Under / Squiggle’s Song will soon be available, with proceeds going to the Whale and Dolphin Conservation (WDC).

LIPU (Lega Italiana Protezione Uccelli – Italian League for the Protection of Birds) is a non-profit conservation organisation dedicated to protecting birds and wildlife in the Italian peninsula.

In collaboration with LIPU, Luca co-organised music performances at the protected oases of Santa Luce and Massaciuccoli, creating spaces for listeners to connect with these landscapes and their non-human inhabitants. Through improvised music, these performances invited an experience of sound as a bridge between human and non-human beings.

The interspecies music at LIPU events align with the Sound Commons Project’s mission to highlight sound as a collective space, where we can recognise our interdependence with all life on Earth.

This project is available as a recorded album on Bandcamp.
